a unclassified briefing. why would the cia give the un ambassador who is representing the white house an unclassified briefing. >> gretchen: she is a spokes person for the united states of america and she has an unclassified briefing? i guess you could argue in the slimmest of margins that you wouldn't want to scare the american people and hide what was really going on and say it was another terrorist attack. >> there is one problem with the whole debate. the day before susan rice went on the talk shows, on the 14th. leon paneta secretary of defense with the defense department said it was a terrorist attack. defense saying it was terror and intelecommunity and state department say it was response to a movie. they are all trying to take the attention away from president obama got in air force one and flew to las vegas and did a fund raiser instead of staying at home. >> brian: and cost him no votes. >> gretchen: it will be interesting to hear what general pettigrew has to say. cheers turned to screams in a parade. a train slammed into a bus in midland, texas. >> gates started to come d

: but that's not what the white house was saying, including u.s. ambassador to the u.n., susan rice, who went on television days after the attack, tying it to protests in egypt against an anti-muslim video. but petraeus also told lawmakers that by the time declassified talking points were given to the white house and congress, r references to al qaeda were edited out to protect classified source. what rice said on tv was consistent with those edited and declassified talking points. >> what is very clear is that ambassador rice used the talking points that the intelligence committee had all signed off on. that is very, very clear. >> reporter: the white house says that the intelligence community did the editing and a senior u.s. intelligence official tells abc news tonight that there was no political interference whatsoever. but as you can imagine, diane, some republicans on cap titol hl say they are not convinced. >> thank you so much, jon. and as you know, a few blocks away at the white house, president obama met today with top congressional leaders about working together on that looming fis

. other point that was clear and i asked the general about this, with respect to the u.n. ambassador, whether she was operating in a precise talking point or not and i asked the general were the talking points we got, that you ultimately signed off open, were they an accurate assessment of the best information at the time that protected classified information and he said "cre." i asked, to the degree that the ambassador's remarks reflected those talking points and if you look and compare them, they are almost identical, was she giving us the best intelligence estimate at the time and his answer was "yes." >>trace: but is that accurate? how is it that protecting classified information turns out to be something where ambassador rice goes on to the five sunday shows and if she is protecting classified information, how do you turn that around where she delivers inaccurate information to the entire country? at that time the information she gave was inaccurate. >>guest: well, the best intelligence the community gave us and gave the ambassador was wrong and the general admitted it was wrong

, there is no blockade as it were, but the u.n. workers have left, the relief workers have left. what is the situation in terms of just daily life now in gaza? >> well, there are definitely shortages on a few fronts. one the fuel shortage. the fuel shortage has been predominantly supplied by israel. we understand there is a shortage of that in this territory, particularly in the northern part. that affects the electricity supply as well. and it also affects people's ability to cook gas and such. there are shortages of food because the farmers are unable to access their land. we spent the part today in a business busy market asking venders what they noticed. prices have gone up through the roof because it's more expensive and difficult. hospitals here are strained but they say right now are fine in terms of the medical supplies. of course if there is a ground invasion and a spike in civilian casualties they will be very much under strain as we've seen in the past. andrea? >> our team there, martin fletcher and amman mohyeldin, thank you so much. joining me for our daily fix, "washington post" columnist
